Solo hiking checklist

A simple solo hiking safety checklist

Solo hiking does not need a long, complicated process. A short checklist can do most of the work: plan the route, share the basics, choose who should know the plan, and make sure there is a clear way to check your latest trip details if needed.

Use HikePing alongside your usual map app, route notes, and local safety advice.
Keep the trip basics clear for the people you trust before you head out.
Do not wait for a grace period if there are signs of danger or injury.

Before you leave

1

Check the forecast, route conditions, and daylight.

2

Charge your phone and bring whatever backup power you normally rely on.

3

Set a realistic return time and allow for normal delays.

4

Choose who should notice if you are late and make sure they understand the plan.

What to share

1

Start point, destination, and the broad route or area.

2

Expected return time and any extra grace time for small delays.

3

Vehicle details, parking area, camp area, or launch point if relevant.

4

Any medical, weather, or terrain details that would matter if help is needed.

If something changes

The most helpful thing you can do is keep the picture clear. Update the latest location if you can, extend the return time if you are simply delayed, or use a manual SOS email if you need urgent help from your selected trip contacts.

Immediate danger or injury is different. In that situation, contact emergency services now if you can do so safely.
